Xiaomi becomes number one smartphone brand in Nepal; consolidates its market leadership in just over one year of business

Xiaomi, global technology leader, has announced that it has become the number one smartphones brand in Nepal, as per IDC’s latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, Q1 2020 Report. This is the first time that the brand has led the smartphone market in Nepal since it started its operations in October 2018. 

Xiaomi climbed to leadership in Nepal for smartphones for the first time in Q1 2020, followed by Samsung and Vivo. With a market share of 30.9% in 2020, four out of the top ten smartphones sold in Nepal were Xiaomi devices.

Key highlights: 

  1. Xiaomi has taken the lead in the smartphone market in Nepal in Q1 2020 for the very first time since it started operating officially in 2018.
  2. Xiaomi leads with 30.9% market share in Q1 2020  
  3. As per IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker Q1 2020 data, Xiaomi is 66% bigger than the second largest smartphone vendor 
  4. Xiaomi is independently as large as the second largest and third largest smartphone vendor combined in Nepal
  5. Xiaomi had two out of the top five smartphones in Q1 2020; with Redmi Note 8 leading as the No 1 smartphone in Nepal followed by Redmi 8 at No 2.

The brand witnessed gradual growth in the market in the form of successful festive sales. The company was No 1 in all sale events of online selling partner Daraz.com with the Dashain sale of Xiaomi contributing massively to the brand. The offline growth had a significant role to play in the overall growth with Xiaomi setting up more than 900 offline partners with 350 Mi Preferred Partner shops across the country within a year, strengthening their presence in Nepal. The company currently holds a strong distribution network across locations. They have also fortified their position in the market with robust after sales service through exclusive authorized service centers as well a dedicated service warehouse to fulfill customer requirements in Nepal.
