With Petrol and Diesel Becoming Cheaper, Transport Operators Call for Automatic Fare Adjustments

The Federation of Nepalese Transport Entrepreneurs (FNTE) has urged the government to adjust public transport fares in accordance with the newly reduced fuel prices. This demand follows the Nepal Oil Corporation's decision to lower petrol prices by 20 rupees per liter, and diesel and kerosene by 30 rupees per liter, effective from Wednesday morning.

FNTE President Punya Prasad Sitaula highlighted the need for a transparent, scientific, and realistic fare adjustment system that aligns with the fluctuations in petroleum prices. He pointed out that while fares are quickly raised when fuel prices go up, the delay in lowering them when fuel prices drop creates unnecessary confusion and unfairness for both passengers and transport operators.

Sitaula further emphasized that public transport fares should not depend solely on fuel costs. He argued that a fair pricing system must also take into account broader economic factors, including vehicle maintenance, insurance, workers' wages, the cost of spare parts, bank interest rates, and overall operational expenses.
