Week Long Campaign Launched in Kathmandu to Tackle Drug Abuse and Trafficking
Top police officials and local leaders have called for a unified public effort to fight the rising issues of drug abuse and human trafficking in the capital.
Speaking at the launch of a week long awareness campaign at Gongabu Bus Park (New Bus Park) on Monday, Additional Inspector General of Police Sushil Singh Rathore stressed that close cooperation between the police and the public is vital to building a safe and crime-free community.
According to Rathore, who heads the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, the newly launched campaign aims to protect young people from drug addiction and uncover hidden cases of human trafficking. He urged everyone in the community to unite against both crimes.
The week-long campaign is being organized by the New Bus Park Police Unit and the Gongabu Community Service Centre. Throughout the week, teams will conduct awareness programs in crowded public spaces around the busy bus park area, including hotels, restaurants, traditional music halls (dohori places), and local schools.
Kathmandu District Police Chief Dilip Ghimire backed the initiative, emphasizing that a collective effort is necessary to tackle these deep-rooted problems around the bustling transit hub.
Local transport and government representatives also pledged their support. Punya Prasad Sitaula, Chairperson of the Nepal National Federation of Transport Entrepreneurs, urged transport operators to stay alert, warning that public vehicles are sometimes secretly used by criminals to smuggle drugs. Meanwhile, Ram Bhakta Ghimire, the local ward chairperson for Tokha Municipality-9, promised full cooperation from the local government to clean up the neighborhood.
Local students from Maharshi School and College and BST College also joined the event to show their support for the campaign.
