Transaction volume declines by half
KATHMANDU 5th, August :
The transaction volume at Nepal Stock Exchange declined by half as the market remained stationary this week, July 29 to August 1.
The benchmark index remained static by showing a nominal gain of 0.66 points in the week’s trading holding on to 402.21 points. As investors stood brooding over the future situation of the market, transaction volume declined by 54.84 per cent in comparison to that of last week.
Despite the announcement by brokerage firms and financial institutions to start lending loans against shares by up to 70 per cent even during blank transfer phase of the shares, investors failed to show their excitement in the market.
The stock exchange witnessed trading worth Rs 208 million of more than 690,510 unit shares belonging to 110 companies in 5361 transactions. Among the total transaction, blue chip stocks worth Rs 145.6 million were traded, comprising of 70 per cent of the total transaction.
The sensitive index that measures the performance of blue chip stocks also went up a little by 0.17 points. However, the indicator of the performance of actual shares traded –– float index –– declined by 0.01 points to 31.22 points. The market that opened at 401.55 points on Sunday afternoon closed at 396.03 points by the end of the day. The index climbed to 400.60 points on Monday, and in the next two days it inched up a little reaching 402.21 points at the end of week.
Despite the suspension of NB Insurance, insurance companies recorded the highest gain in the week, pushing the subgroup up by 9.76 points. Hotels subgroup was the biggest earner of the week that went up by 10.09 points due to Soaltee Hotel’s gain of Rs eight per unit share. Hydropower and others subgroup continued their gain by earning 5.77 points and 5.87 points, respectively.
Commercial banks, development banks and finance companies lost 0.5 points, 2.2 points and 1.8 points, respectively in the week’s trading. Manufacturing subgroup also went down by 0.23 points. Likewise, trading companies also suffered a loss of 4.23 points as Bishal Bazaar Company’s share prices took a dip.
This week, Chilime Hydropower Company was the forerunner in terms of trading volume and transaction with trading of shares worth Rs 34.5 million in 365 transactions. Kist Bank topped in terms of number of shares traded with 139,180 unit shares traded.
The top five performers of the week were Chilime Hydropower (Rs 34.51
million), Everest Bank
(Rs 33.72 million), Kist Bank (Rs 15.22 million), Bank of Kathmandu (Rs 14.10 million) and Nabil Bank
(Rs 8.44 million).
