Transaction volume at Nepse sees a drastic fall

KATHMANDU, May 8:
The transaction volume at Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) dropped as the index continued its downslide this week (May 2 to 5). “The share prices have plunged so much so that the investors are not willing to sell at present,” said Prakash Rajoria, general secretary, Nepal Stock Investors’ Association.

“Only those with acute need of funds are selling at present,” he added.

He is however optimistic that the market will soon pick up as the selling pressure has reduced and low share prices meaning the best time to purchase shares that might eventually bring the balance and stability back in the market.

This week, Nepse’s trading floor observed 311,340 unit shares of 102 companies worth Rs 68.3 million being traded through 6,768 transactions in the four trading days. This is 421.40 per cent decline in the transaction volume in comparison with that of last week.

On Monday morning the secondary market opened at 347.72 points by the closing time the market went further down to 344.58 points. On Tuesday, the index further went down to 339.55 points. Next day also index continued its slide to 338.86 points, a record low in last five years. On the last trading day, the index increased a little to 339.53 points.

The sensitive index measuring the performance of Class-A companies declined by 2.26 points reaching 83.46 points by the end of the week. Among the total transactions, the trading of blue-chip stocks of Class-A companies consisted of 58.32 per cent amounting to Rs 39.8 million. The float index that indicates the performance of the actual shares traded throughout the week also went down by 0.57 points to 28.71 points.
