Trading volume comes down due to low investor confidence

The weekly trading volume in Nepse has come down to a mere Rs 83 million as the index lost 5.09 points this week (August 25 to September 1).

The volatile market scenario has confined the weekly transaction volume of Nepse trading floor to less than Rs 100 million since some week’s back.

The share market witnessed the transaction worth Rs 83.2 million of 318,880 unit shares of 110 companies through 4,043 transactions in four trading days due to a day public holiday in the week. The transaction volume this week declined by 12.33 per cent compared to that of a week ago. In the last three months when the Nepse was simmering over 340 points, the market’s turnover always stood over Rs 300 million. The contraction in the transaction volume demonstrated that the investors are shying away from the stock market due to low confidence.

The market that had plun-ged below 350 points last week further went down, though on Sunday morning the market opened at 346.92 points. it closed at 341.73 points on Thursday.

The class ‘A’ companies’ measuring index — sensitive index — also went down by 1.46 points to close at 85.49 points. Among the total transactions, the trading of blue chip stocks of class ‘A’ companies consisted of 67.59 per cent amounting to Rs 53.3 million. The float index that is the barometer of the actual stocks traded in the market also dipped by 0.71 point to close at 28.62 points. Only others and hydropower subgroup recorded gains, while the rest ended up in red zone.

Nepal Telecom’s gain of Rs 10 per unit share pushed the others subgroup to gain 11.75 points while hydropowers also went up by 5.38 points. But banking lost 11.46 points as the heavyweights Nabil Bank and Standard Chartered Bank lost Rs 190 and Rs 115 during the weekly trading. The insurance companies also went down by 6.77 points followed by finance companies that lost 5.19 points.

Bank of Kathmandu topped the charts in terms of transaction amount with trading worth Rs 14 million. National Hydropower was fore runner in terms of number of transactions with 307 transactions. In terms of numbers of shares traded Bishwo Bikas Bank topped the chart by trading 32,400 unit shares.
