Three flying squads to check revenue leakages

Department of Revenue and Money Laundering Investigation formed three separate Flying Squads to check revenue leakages across the country.
“The revived squads will be deployed at the western part, eastern part and in the Kathmandu valley to tighten revenue mobilisation,” according to the department. They are entrusted with the right to confiscate any vehicle, goods and check accounts of firms and other business houses at any time, if they are suspicious.
The squads are formed under Revenue Leakage (Investigation and Control) Act and will carry out their responsibilities with assistance from local administration and security forces.
Narayan Acharya of the department will coordinate the squad in the eastern part, Nara Bahadur Thapa will coordinate the squad in the western part and Mohan Bahadur Chand will lead the squad in the Kathmandu valley, the department source said, adding that, the squad chief will enjoy the power equal to tax officer and is entrusted with the right to arrest anybody on the spot, if found involved in leakages.
The squads are basically formed to control revenue leakages at the festive season, the source informed.
“The department did not change the modality of flying squads since the festivals are approaching around the corner and the chance of evading tax remains high, though the flying squads have drawn criticism in the past,” the department source added.
The squads will bring the importer, firms and other business entities that are involved in revenue leakages under the tax net, the source said.
Earlier after strong opposition from the traders, the department has terminated the squads.
