Taxpayers seek simple online registration

KATHMANDU, MAY 13: 

Taxpayers and auditors have asked the tax administration to simplify the procedure of paying the income tax.

E-submission of details of tax related information will reduce hassles while paying income tax, said president of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal Sudarshan Raj Pande, adding that the tax administration should introduce the provision of online confirmation of any submission of tax related information. 

“The online registration of information related to income tax has reduced unnecessary organisational burden on taxpayers,” he said, “But, there still is a problem since taxpayers have to go to the tax offices to confirm their registration.”

Only the tax office in Bhaktapur has introduced the system of online confirmation so far, he informed. “All tax offices should adopt the same system in the future.”

Pande also demanded for the introduction of a system of accepting bank deposit slips electronically by coordinating with the banks.

The tax administration should adopt the online system as much as possible, said spokesperson at the finance ministry Rajan Khanal, adding that online submission system will help reduce the chances of nepotism and favouritism and also enhance the effectiveness of the tax administration.

The ministry is trying to further strengthen its online system so that a face-to-face 

interaction between a taxpayer and a tax officer is not necessary, Khanal added. “The online registration of transaction details and tax submission 

will also help in reducing tax related frauds.”

The tax administration can easily detect any mismatch and other types of frauds if a proper online system is introduced, he said. 

In the meantime, taxpayers have asked the Inland Revenue Department to enhance the capacity of its software. The existing software installed at the department always faces technical glitches at the end of the month, when most of the taxpayers want to submit their tax details, taxpayers said. “The department should upgrade its system so that the department can bear the overflow without any technical problem.”

The tax administration has seen significant changes since the implementation of the 

online registration system for the tax related information, according to the Inland Revenue Department.
