Tatopani customs full of goods imported for Dashain

With the beginning of the festive season, Tatopani Customs, which was operating three days a week, is now a busy place. The customs premises is full of goods imported targeting the Dashain festival.

According to statistics, around 80 percent of the imports, especially readymade garment and footwear products, come through Tatopani customs.

Around 40-50 containers carrying Chinese goods are entering the Kathmandu valley every day. According to officer Sushil Sharma, Rs 20 million is collected daily in revenues on an average. Last two weeks’ revenue collection stood at Rs 280 million, he said.

Also, the Chinese authorities are releasing enough containers, according Rajendra Kumar Shrestha, president of Sindhupalchowk Chamber of Commerce. “We are not facing problems as we used to ion previous years,” said Shrestha. “Earlier, the Chinese authorities did not release enough containers.”

During the recently held bilateral meeting, the Chinese and Nepali authorities had reached an agreement to facilitate bilateral trade. “Chinese authorities have said they have implemented the agreement,” said Durga Prasad Adhikari, chief district officer.

Tatopani Customs officials say that surge in imports and facilitation by the Chinese authorities have helped the office meet its revenue target.
