Sugar mills ready to sell energy to NEA
KATHMANDU, Dec 29:
Nepal Sugar Mills Association has said that it is ready to connect electricity generated in sugar mills to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).
Speaking at a discussion program organized at the Ministry of Industry on Sunday, the sugar producers say 11 sugar mills across the country can add a combined 40 MW to the national grid. Officials of NEA were also present in the discussion program.
At a time when the country has been facing long power cuts, Minister for Industry Mahesh Basnet said NEA should do the needful for connecting energy generated by the mills to the national grid.
Discussions about utilizing energy generated by sugar mills have been doing rounds since long. But it has failed to materialize as there is no such provision in the existing Electricity Act.
Basnet said they can also make amendment to the Act through ordinance if needed.
Shashi Kanta Agrawal, president of the association, said they were ready to sell energy to NEA at Rs 8.5 per unit.
Sugar mills operate in dry months when power generation from hydropower projects falls.
