A sudden flood in the Budhi Gandaki River has caused major damage in Chumnubri Rural Municipality of Gorkha district, sweeping away around 35 houses and damaging Machhikhola Bazaar. The flood occurred after a landslide blocked the river in the Chhekampar area and a flash flood hit Syarkhola in Chumchet. A suspension bridge connecting to Kerauja was also washed away, disrupting local movement.
Rescue operations are underway, with Home Minister Sudan Gurung, security personnel and helicopters deployed to support the response. Authorities have warned that the flood could reach the Trishuli confluence, putting riverside settlements at risk. Residents in vulnerable areas have been urged to remain alert and move to safer locations.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Food Hygiene has activated the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) to coordinate medical services and emergency assistance in the affected areas. People requiring health related support can contact the free helpline at 1115.
