Sudan Gurung Reappointed as Home Minister; Oath-Taking Set at 3 PM After Clean Chit
Sudan Gurung has been reappointed as the Minister for Home Affairs.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, his oath of office and secrecy is scheduled to be administered today at 3 PM at Sheetal Niwas, the Office of the President.
Gurung had earlier stepped down from the post following public controversy over alleged business ties with trader Deepak Bhatta and questions raised over his share investments in Liberty Micro Insurance and Star Micro Insurance. He had served as Home Minister for only 26 days.
Questions had also been raised regarding the source of funds used for purchasing shares worth around Rs 50 lakhs, which Gurung had defended by claiming he invested through borrowed money.
In response to the controversy, the government had formed a three-member investigation committee led by former High Court judge Achyut Prasad Bhandari, with members including Auditor General Shobakant Paudel and Deputy Attorney General Achyut Mani Neupane. The committee was tasked with examining the allegations and submitting a report within 15 days, later extended by five days.
The committee has since cleared Gurung of wrongdoing, concluding that the allegations could not be substantiated after reviewing his assets and share records. Its 45-page report described all his movable and immovable properties as legitimate, adding that discrepancies in asset declarations reflected systemic weaknesses rather than individual misconduct.
