Shah announces bid for NRNA president

KATHMANDU, AUG 15 -

Five candidates are now in the race for the presidency of the Non-Resident Nepali Association ( NRNA ). The election is scheduled for this October.

Rameshwor Shah from the UAE declared his candidacy for the top post on Wednesday. Shah is the fifth person to announce his candidacy for president of the international coordination council of the NRNA . Its sixth international convention is scheduled to take place from Oct 19-22 in Kathmandu.

The other aspirants in the fray are Shesh Ghale, Tenji Sherpa, Ram Pratap Thapa and Hitman Gurung. Unveiling his election manifesto, Shah said his major agenda would be to take the ongoing mission of dual citizenship or continuation of citizenship to its logical end.  

“As remittance accounts for one-fourth of Nepal’s economy, my effort will be to mobilize it in the productive sector,” said Shah who is also the incumbent vice-president of the NRNA . Besides remittance, there is a need for effective mobilization of the skill and know-how gained by migrant workers abroad to ensure a prosperous Nepal, he added.  

“I will also make an effort to develop an investment-friendly environment to attract foreign direct investment on a larger scale.” He said that each day 2,000 jobseekers enter the Middle East and Malaysia in search of employment, which has resulted in an increased number of various labour-related problems.

“In particular, there is a great risk of exploitation and abuse of women. In this context, my major focus will be on ensuring safe migration and better conditions in foreign employment,” he said. “A taskforce on foreign employment management and improvement, the NRNA Women Affairs, among others associations, will be strengthened and efforts will be made to coordinate with the Foreign Employment Department to ensure safe migration,” Shah said.
