S Korea to provide US$ 4.6m for DRC

KATHMANDU, May 15:

The government of South Korea has agreed to provide Nepal a grant assistance of US$ 4.6 million for the establishment of Disaster Recovery Center for the Government Integrated Data Center (GIDC).

An agreement to this effect was signed by Finance Secretary Shanta Raj Subedi and South Korean ambassador to Nepal Il Doo Kim at the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on behalf of Republic of Korea and National Information and Technology Center (NITC) of Nepal will implement the project.

The DRC will be established in Hetauda Municipality.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ambassador Kim said the South Korean government believes that the DRC will help minimize the governmental data losses from natural disaster or human induced disaster through the back up system.

The project aims at harvesting synergy effect in the information management of the government with GIDS in Singhadurbar.

Besides providing construction expenses, software, equipment and materials necessary to implement the project, KOICA will also provide technical trainings to Nepali officials, according to Secretary Subedi.

Earlier KOICA had supported the Government of Nepal to build GIDC in 2008. Currently, government and non-government organizations are using GIDC to store the important information.
