Road expansion drive to cover Valley

After widening roads in major city areas in the Capital, the authorities concerned are now planning to continue with the work in the outskirts too.

According to Bhaikaji Tiwari , chief of the Kathmandu Valley Town Development Implementation Committee (KVTDIC), they are now planning to expand roads in Godawari, Sundarijal and Tokha areas. “We have to now expand feeder roads which fall under our work plan,” Tiwari said.

“We have slowed our expansion drive in the city areas as the stakeholders concerned responsible for the reconstruction work have not been able to keep pace with the expansion” he added.

Till now, the road expansion drive has covered 135 kilometres in Kathmandu, 25 kilometres in Lalitpur and 3 kilometres in Bhaktapur. Out of the total expanded road sections, only around 40 kilometre section has been reconstructed.

“We have only expanded two-third of the roads that we planned to widen. It will still take years to complete the project,” Tiwari said, adding that the work in the outskirts will be easier due to thin settlements.

Meanwhile, the KVDTIC is also planning to expand the Balaju bypass-Kalanki road. While the Department of Roads is responsible for the construction of major roads, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) looks after the smaller link roads.
