Revenue dept set to start second phase of customs inspection
KATHMANDU, June 25:
High Level panel led by deputy general at the Department of Revenue Investigation is all set to start second phase of monitoring and inspection of different customs and non-customs points at the different bordering districts.
“The panel will inspect major customs offices including Tatopani, Birjung, Biratnagar and Bhairahawa,” director general Shanta Bahadur Shrestha said, adding that the inspection will be aimed at stopping revenue leakages from the customs points.
The panel will also monitor non-customs points, according to him. “Non-customs smuggling is also hurting the government’s revenue collection.” Non-customs smuggling is open secret in the bordering districts, he asserted, emphasising on the need to control such leakages.
“Earlier too, the panel had inspected different customs points and non-customs points from Birjung to Biratnagar,” director general of the department shrestha said, informing that the panel had submitted detail report of the state of revenue leakages and ways to control it.
“The Finance Ministry is also implementing the recommendations submitted by the panel,” he said.
“The panel’s second phase inspection will assess improvement in the revenue leakages including implementation of its recommendations, he informed.
The government had on April 26 formed High Level Panel headed by the director general at the Department of Revenue Investigation to control revenue leakage. The panel has been investigating complaints of growing cases of smuggling of goods. “It can also issue on the spot instructions in the course of field inspections to control revenue leakage,” Shrestha said, adding that high level panel had found massive leakages in both customs and non-customs points in the first phase. “Under invoicing was a key problem along with non-customs smuggling.”
Shrestha pledged to end smuggling as much the panel can do.
