Regional cooperation must to fight cybercrime: Experts

Cyber experts suggested to cooperate more closely to tackle the growing problem of cybercrime in the country.
Nepal Telecommunications Authority spokesperson Kailash Prasad Neupane after returning to the country from the Asia Pacific Regional Workshop on Fighting Cybercrime that was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, said that the participants also recommended Nepal to introduce the policy to protect victims of cybercrime.
The United Nations (UN)-sponsored conference of prosecutors and information communications technology (ICT) experts called for a strengthening of international response to security threats from cyberspace, spokesperson at the Nepal Telecommunications Authority Kailash Prasad Neupane informed.
Cybercrime describes a wide range of offenses. It includes offenses against computer data and systems like hacking, computer-related forgery and fraud like phishing, as well as content offenses such as disseminating online child sexual abuse material, and copyright offenses, including the dissemination of pirated content, according to UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
“As the world’s centre of economic gravity shifts eastwards, countries in Asia-Pacific have a strong interest in countering this threat to economic stability and rule of law,” it said.
The government should show readiness to tackle cybercrime in effective manner and the essential elements of a response first include knowing the problem, establishing norms and standards and building technical ability, Neupane said.
Organised by UN Office on Drug and Crime and International Telecommunication Union, over 60 industry experts, ICT security specialists, public prosecutors and other representatives from 20 Asia-Pacific countries had took part in the conference, Neupane said, adding that close partnership and cooperation among nation states is a must to control cybercrime since it is borderless.
The future environment for cybercrime will become more dangerous if the government does not take it seriously right now, he said, adding that it will be more complicated if the government does not launch awareness programme regarding cybercrime.
The workshop was quite useful to garner cooperation between law enforcement agencies and with the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, Neupane said.
Nepal also sought close coordination and cooperation to cope with cybercrime in the workshop.
