Race for NRNA president heats up

KATHMANDU, AUG 09 -

With the sixth Non-Resident Nepali Global Conference just two months away, the race for the presidency of the Non-Resident Nepali Association ( NRNA ) has begun.

On Thursday, Australian-based Nepali entrepreneur Shesh Ghale announced his candidacy for president of the NRNA . Its next international convention is scheduled to take place from Oct 19-22 in Kathmandu.

Ghale is the fourth person to announce his candidacy for the top position of the international coordination council of the NRNA . Others running for president are incumbent Vice-President Hitman Gurung, General Secretary Tenzi Sherpa, and Patron Ram Pratap Thapa. Unveiling his manifesto after announcing his candidacy, Ghale said that his major focus would be on increasing capital investment and welfare activities in Nepal while continuing the existing agenda of the NRNA .

Ghale, who plans to open a high class hotel in Kathmandu, said that his effort would be on increasing investment of capital, knowledge, skill and time in the country. “I will also form a fund for welfare purposes under the NRNA to help underprivileged people,” he said.

He also vowed to continue the existing agenda of NRNs—strengthening the NRN movement and registering the NRNA ,

issue of safe migration and ensuring better conditions in foreign employment and dual citizenship or continuation of Nepali citizenship. “Honouring the former leadership of the NRNA , my efforts will be concentrated on settling these issues,” he said. “I will have cent percent contribution in this regard.”

Ghale added that he would consult with the officials of the former executive committee before drawing a new roadmap for the NRNA . “I want to strengthen myself with the experiences of former initiators of the NRN movement,” he said.

Ghale has been travelling to different countries to generate support for his candidacy for the last two months. He announced he was running for president after receiving good wishes from across the NRN community. Ghale expressed his determination to go to the election with the firm belief of competing if a consensus for the highest post is not possible.
