Pvt sector flays govt failure to present budget

The business community has criticised the government for its ‘shameful’ failure to present the budget at the eleventh hour. They also accused the political parties of putting their partisan agendas ahead of national agendas in the budget.
As the government failed take Madhesi parties into confidence, it chose not to present the budget on Thursday. “This shows the political parties are not serious about the country’s deteriorating business and investment environment, and increasing unemployment,” said Kush Kumar Joshi, former president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI). “The scenario clearly reflects how the politics is undermining economic and social prosperity.”
Former FNCCI president Chandi Raj Dhakal said postponing the budget amid political pressure has exposed the fact that parties are not serious about the national agenda. “The government failure to bring the budget is unfortunate for all Nepalis and the business community,” he said.
After the main opposition Nepali Congress agreed for the budget presentation by the incumbent government, the business community had hoped that the annual budget would be presented in time. However, things did not go as planned and the government decided not to present the budget at last hour.
This has economists worried. “Thursday’s political environment has created doubts about whether the government will be able to present the budget on Friday too,” said economist Chiranjivi Nepal, adding that such an irresponsible act will affect the country’s macroeconomic stability.
Jagdish Prasad Rathi, chairman of the revenue committee at FNCCI, said the private sector was disheartened by the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha’s stance. The private sector has been demanding that a certain date be fixed for the annual budget presentation in the new constitution.
