Proposed capital investment of industries goes up
KATHMANDU, JUN 10 -
Although the registration of new industries has declined, the proposed capital investment has increased in the first 10 months of current fiscal year.
Registration of medium and large industries (MLIs) fell by five percent in the first 10 months of 2010-11 compared to the same period last year. However, the proposed capital investment has increased by 25 percent over period.
According to the Department of Industries (DoI), a total 185 MLIs were registered so far this year compared to 195 last year. These industries have proposed a total investment of Rs 34.2 billion in fixed capital and employment to more than 10,000 individuals. Among these, 33 were registered in foreign investment.
DoI Director General Dhundi Raj Pokhrel said worsening investment environment and low business confidence could be the reasons behind the decline in the registration.
The government has categorised an industry with a fixed capital investment of Rs 30-100 million in medium industries. Similarly, an industry with an investment of over Rs 100 million is categorised as large industries.
A majority of the registered industries were service-based, followed by manufacturing, tourism and others. According to the department, 61 service-based industries were registered during the period. Similarly, the department registered 41 manufacturing, 35 tourism and 20 energy-based industries. Likewise, 19 agro-based, 7 mineral-based and 2 construction industries were also registered during the review period. “Of late, investors are being attracted towards the service sector,” said Pokhrel.
The department had registered 258 MLIs in the last fiscal year.
So far, a total of 4,495 medium and large industries have been registered. They have proposed a total investment of Rs 289.2 billion and employment to 409,309 individuals.
