Price of seasonal vegetables down

KATHMANDU: Increase in supply from neighbouring districts has made some seasonal vegetables more affordable for Kathmandu denizens.

Compared to last week, the wholesale price of cauliflowers and green peas declined by 33 and 32 per cent, respectively, this week. Currently, cauliflowers and green peas are being sold at Rs 24 and Rs 30 per kg against Rs 36 and Rs 44 a kg, respectively, last week at the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market.

However, drop in the wholesale price of cauliflowers has had no impact in retail price, which hovers at around Rs 30 per kg — same as last week. But the retail price of green peas has declined by 25 per cent in comparison to last week from Rs 40 to Rs 30.

According to senior planning officer at Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board Binaya Shrestha, around 700 tonnes of seasonal vegetables were supplied at Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market this week, as opposed to around 900 tonnes the previous week. Last week, due to the Makar Sankrati festival, there was a surge in supply of yam and sweet potatoes, which was at around 300 tonnes.

Retail price of other vegetables like potatoes, tomatoes, and onions this week is almost similar to that of last week, hovering at around Rs 35, Rs 35 and Rs 40 per kg, respectively.
