A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines on Monday morning, June 8, 2026. The massive underground shaking happened at around 7:37 a.m. local time, with its center located just off the coast of Sarangani province on the island of Mindanao. Because the earthquake was so strong and happened underwater, it immediately triggered emergency tsunami warnings across the region, including in the neighboring countries of Indonesia and Malaysia. Authorities quickly urged people living in coastal areas to move inland or seek higher ground for safety.

The earthquake caused serious damage across several areas in southern Mindanao, particularly in General Santos City. The heavy shaking caused multiple buildings, homes, and convenience stores to collapse, leaving streets covered in concrete debris. Local power grids and phone networks were knocked out in the hardest hit provinces, and schools immediately called off classes to keep students safe.

Disaster response teams and local police were quickly sent out to search the rubble and help those who were trapped or hurt. Government agencies report that at least four to eight people have died, and more than 200 others have been treated for injuries. While the worst of the tsunami threat has passed with only small waves recorded on nearby coastlines, emergency teams are continuing to clear the wreckage, restore electricity, and check on cut-off communities to find out the full extent of the tragedy.
