Political uncertainty takes toll on investor confidence

The ongoing political uncertainty weighed the stock market further down by 0.11 point this week.

Along with the benchmark index, the trading volume of Nepse also saw the decline of 16.34 per cent compared to last week’s trade as investors are opting for ‘wait and watch’ measure in the present volatile situation.

On Monday morning, the stock market opened at 352.65 points that went a little up to 353.33 points by the end of the day’s trading. Next day also the index crept a little up to 353.59 points. On Wednesday the index slid down but on the last trading day, the market crawled a little up to close at 352.54 points.

The stock exchange witnessed 568,760 unit shares of 114 companies worth Rs 129.7 million being traded through 4,810 transactions in the four trading days as the Sunday was a public holiday.

The sensitive index that measures performance of Class ‘A’ companies crept up a little by 0.61 points reaching 87.43 points on the week’s trading. Among the total transactions, the trading of class ‘A’ companies consisted of 54.60 per cent amounting to Rs 78 million. The float index that indicates the performance of the actual shares traded throughout the week did not see any change.

This week, hydropower, banking and insurance subgroups were able to gain a little while rest ended up in the red.

Hydropower subgroup earned 10.91 points while commercial banks and insurance gained 0.64 points and 2.11 points, respectively.

Hotel subgroup was the top loser as Soaltee Hotel lost Rs 20 per unit share. Nepal Telecom’s loss of Rs 2 per share also pulled others subgroup down by 2.35 points. Development banks and finance companies also lost 1.86 points and 0.33 points, respectively.

No shares of companies belonging to manufacturing and trading subgroup were traded this week.

Bank of Kathmandu topped the charts in terms of transaction amount with trading worth Rs 20.5 million. In terms of number of transactions, Bishwo Bikas Bank topped the chart with 518 transactions. In terms of numbers of shares traded Paschimanchal Development Bank topped by trading of 92,500 unit shares.

The top five performers of the week are Bank of Kathmandu (Rs 20.56 million), Paschimanchal Development Bank (Rs 12.02 million), Everest Bank (Rs 8.36 million), Standard Chartered Bank (Rs 7.77 million) and Nepal in Investment Bank (Rs 5.19 million).
