KATHMANDU, SEP 17 -
As the bill on investment board has already been passed by the parliament, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Friday assured that the government would form an investment board as soon as possible.

“The government will facilitate domestic and foreign investment by forming the investment board at the earliest,” the PM told the parliament.

The parliament had endorsed the investment board bill, which has now become an Act, a month ago. The Act seeks to form the PM-led board which will create an investment-friendly environment in the decision-making process.

As per the Act, the board will oversee major projects such as fast-track, railway, international airport, fertiliser industries and petroleum refinery plants.

The PM also reiterated that the government would organise an investment convention after declaring 2012 as investment year.

Bhattarai said his government was committed to ensuring a good environment for the private sector to lead the economy towards the “right direction with high confidence and conviction.” As the labour problem is a “big hindrance” to attracting investment, the PM urged trade unions to put forward their demands with more patience and in a “democratic manner.” He urged the managements and workers to solve all disputes through dialogue.

Bhattarai reiterated his belief that the country could achieve a double-digit growth with the “leap frog” development policy instead of the “snake-like crawling” policy. “For this, the government will make an effective system to mobilise national priority projects, including infrastructure projects, hydropower, tourism, manufacturing and service sector,” Bhattarai said.

He also termed his decision to use the Nepal-assembled ‘Mustang Max’ car as a symbol of national economic thinking that seeks to promote industries that use local raw materials and add value.
