PM urges private sector to be innovative

KATHMANDU, DEC 23: 

Prime minister Baburam Bhattarai has urged the private sector to lead in business through innovative projects. The government is looking at the private sector as an agent of change, so they must lead in the development process, he said during the 10th annual general meeting (AGM) of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) today. 

Let’s join hands for prosperity, he said. “If we — the government and private sector — work together, we can bring visible changes in the next two years,” he said, adding that the government is ready to support industrialists and entrepreneurs in every step. 

Bhattarai said that the government has envisioned rapid development in the coming years. The government has targeted double digit growth and touching per capita income of about $ 3,000 in the next 10 years, he added. He praised Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus’s work on social business and said that the country needed social business initiatives to bridge the gap between the rich and poor. We are looking at entrepreneurship and social business could be the best model for us, Bhattarai added. In the AGM, Prof Yunus urged the Nepali corporate sector to start social business through their corporate social responsibility programmes. “We can start the business in a small scale and increase it gradually in the coming days,” he said. Yunus said social business is best for poor countries as it is based on fair trade. 

CNI president Binod Kumar Chaudhary asked the government to build a better industrial environment for development. The government has many plans for development but there is no will to implement them, he said. CNI felicitated 21 people who have contributed to its development.
