PM asks NRNs in Myanmar to invest in Nepal

KATHMANDU:

Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has asked Nepali diaspora living in Myamar to invest in development of Nepal.

Koirala, who visited Myanmar to participate in the Third BIMSTEC Summit, held an interaction with the Non-Resident Nepalis in Myanmar and Burmese nationals of Nepali origin at the Nepali Embassy in Yangon on Wednesday. On the occasion, he stated that the government led by him would work for economic progress of the country along with constitution writing, the national news agency RSS reported from Yangon.

Pointing out agriculture, hydropower, tourism and infrastructural developments as the sector of potential investment, Prime Minister Koirala urged the Nepali diaspora to contribute in socio-economic development of the country of their decent.

Koirala also assured that the Nepal government would make amendments in the laws if that was necessary to bring in foreign investment.

“Our nation is not poor. We are prosperous in terms of natural resources. However, it is hard to achieve our goals until political instability prevails,” said Koirala.

Speaking at the function, Minister for Foreign Affairs Mahendra Bahadur Pandey stressed on the need of tourism development for overall development of Nepal.

Nepal's Ambassador for Myanmar, Paras Ghimire, pointed out the need for a direct air connection between Myanmar and Nepal such that over 250,000 people of Nepali origin in Myanmar can visit Pashupatinath and Lumbini easily.

In response, Minister Pandey said that he would consider the issue.

Meanwhile, the Nepali delegation was scheduled to board a Thai Airways flight to Thai capital Bangkok today evening at around 7:40 pm local time.

The delegation will return home tomorrow afternoon.
