PEDB to approach EC regarding CEO selection
KATHMANDU,JUNE 18:
Public Enterprises Directorate Board (PEDB) has said that it
will hold discussions with the Election Commission (EC) to be clear about whether or not the board can initiate a new process to appoint chief executive officers (CEO) at various public enterprises.
The Election Commission has been objecting to the various processes initiated by other government agencies citing the already declared election date as the reason for its objection, said a source at the Finance Ministry. “The board will take further action only after it gets a confirmation from the commission.”
Currently, 10 public enterprises (PE) have been operating without a chief executive officer, he said. “The appointment of CEOs is a must to make the performance of public enterprises more effective.”
However, the selection process of chief executive officer at public enterprises is not as easy as expected, he claimed. “The appointment process which the board had initiated has come to a standstill due to legal hassles from within the PEs.”
The selection process for a chief executive officer in various public enterprises including Nepal Oil Corporation, Nepal Electricity Authority and Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) have been halted at present, he said.
“The existing chiefs at Nepal Electricity Authority and Nepal Oil Corporation approached the Supreme Court when the board initiated the appointment process,” he said. “Employees at NAC are also preparing to challenge the board’s decision to initiate the CEO selection process.”
Chairman of Public Enterprises Directorate Board Bimal Wagle, however, said that the CEO selection process for Employees Provident Fund is expected to be completed in the stipulated time. “A total of six aspirants have applied for the vacant post at the fund,” said Wagle. “The board will carry out the short-listing of eligible candidates soon.”
The government has listed 39 public enterprises under the recently formed Public Enterprises Directorate Board.
