PEB to rush appt process of chiefs of PEs

The Pubic Enterprise Board ( PEB ) is planning to rush the appointment process of chief executives in public enterprises (PEs) where the post has lain vacant or is held by a political appointee. PEB chairman Bimal Wagle said that the board would publish wanted advertisements every week and 10 days.

“We will start issuing vacancy notices very soon,” he said. There are not many PEs where the top post is vacant, and PEs with political appointees will be the PEB ’s first target. The vacant posts will be filled through open competition in a break from tradition where the top job is usually given to political appointees.  

The government has appointed chief executives at the Employees Provident Fund, Nepal Airlines Corporation, Nepal Television and Hydroelectric Investment and Development Company based on the PEB ’s recommendation. Meanwhile, the PEB has started the appointment process at Rastriya Beema Sansthan and Agriculture Inputs Company.

Political appointees hold the top post at many PEs, and it will be a challenge for the PEB to dislodge them through free competition.

The Cabinet recently amended a number of provisions in the PE Directorate Board Order to allow political appointees to sit on the board of PEs.

However, Wagle said that the PEB would work as mandated by the order published in Nepal Gazette.
