KATHMANDU, May 13:

Patanjali Yogpeeth - an institution run by Indian yoga guru Ramdev - has showed interest to revive Birgunj Sugar Factory.

According to Minister for Industry Karna Bahadur Thapa, the officials of Yogpeeth have assured him that they won´t put any liability on the government and have offered to make all the investment required to operate the factory.

“We have asked the interested party to submit detailed proposal. We will then forward the proposal to the privatization unit chaired by the finance minister,” Minister Thapa said, adding, “We are also studying the recommendations given by the Public Enterprises Direction Board as well.”

In the initial talks with MoI representatives, Patanjali Yogpeeth has offered to facilitate sugarcane farmers by providing them tractors and sugarcane seeds.

According to Thapa, who recently visited the factory and held discussion with staffers, the machinery at the factory can be used.

The government had decided to liquidate Birgunj Sugar Factory in 2003. However, Public Enterprises Direction Board (PEDB) has recommended to the government to operate the factory on public-private partnership model.
