KATHMANDU, Nov 1 :

The Nepal Telecom (NT) has decided to reduce internet tariff by 20 percent. The telecom service provider has also started providing additional data volume for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) and broadband users.

“We have reduced the tariff of all our internet packages by 20 percent and sent new rates for approval by Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA). Once we get the go-ahead from NTA we will be providing internet service at cheaper price to our customers,” said Buddhi Prasad Acharya, managing director of NT, adding that the demand of internet is growing and we want more people to use internet service.

NT has currently started providing almost 50 percent additional volumes to its ADSL subscribers for the same price. With this, the customers using ADSL with a speed of 192 kbps are getting a speed of 256 kbps and those using internet with speed of 384 kbps are getting a speed of 512 kbps.

Those using volume based ADSL users are also getting additional volume of 50 percent.

NT had planned to increase the data volume provided to its internet subscribers before Dashain but the protest by engineers against the appointment of non- technical person as MD had delayed the decision.

As per the latest Management Information System (MIS) report as of mid-August released by NTA, NT has 114,673 internet users. “At a time when our internet users are growing and the data is taking over the market compared to voice, we are hopeful that additional volume we offer to our customers and reduction in price will help increase our customer base,” said Acharya.

NT is also focusing on data services in 2014/15 and the offer is provided as per its annual plan to increase its data subscribers. It is installing Wi-Fi hotspots in various parts of the country so that people can use its Wi-Fi service with ease.

NT plans to add 32,227 new ADSL subscribers in the current fiscal year.

Vaidya appointed as spokesperson of NT

Nepal Telecom has appointed deputy manager Pratibha Vaidya as NT spokesperson replacing Guna Keshari Pradhan. Pradhan has been transferred to operation and maintenance department.

Likewise, Rajesh Joshi, joint spokesperson of NT has been transferred to Regional Directorate, Tripureswar.
