NT‚ Ncell compete for market pie

There seems a competition between the oldest telecom service provider and the youngest one in the market.

Nepal Telecom leads market in terms of telephone subscriber closely followed by Ncell, according to a report from Nepal Telecommunications Authority.

Management Information System report — of the telecom service providers that has data until mid April 2011 — revealed that Nepal Telecom holds 53 per cent market share whereas Ncell holds 41 per cent.

“The market share of UTL is four per cent and Smart and Nepal Satellite has one per cent each,” according to the report.

Ncell has expanded one per cent of its market share in telephone subscriber compared to a month ago — mid-march — whereas UTL has lost one per cent market share. But the Nepal Telecom and other service providers are at the constant position.

“The market share of telephone subscriber of Ncell was 40 per cent and UTL had five per cent till mid-March,” the report said, adding that the number of people with a fixed line or mobile phone in Nepal has reached to 12.22 million — pushing overall teledensity upto 42.71 per cent by April 15. The users of telecom service recorded at 11.87 million and overall teledensity was at 41.51 per cent by March 15, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority report said.

The fixed-line subscribers reached 844,990, mobile users are 10.71 million, and satellite and limited mobility users are at 670,217, according to the report. The penetration rate of mobile service has also increased to 37.47 per cent and fixed line service penetration rate also went upto 2.95 per cent, whereas penetration rate of other services is at 2.34 per cent by the mid April.

Similarly, the data revealed that internet penetration rate has reached 8.74 per cent.
