KATHMANDU:
Nepal Telecom is all set to expand its value added services. After the telecom market competition heated up, tariff went down but taroff alone won’t appeal consumers, according to its managing director Vishwanth Goel.

“Nepal Telecom has recognised the importance of value added services,” he said, adding that it is imperative to focus on alternate revenue streams since average revenue per user has decreased and competition among operators have increased.

The subscriber base of the company has expanded by 24 per cent during the fiscal year 2010-11, Goel informed. “However, its profit growth rate is limited to less than three per cent.”

From the trend of slow down in profit rate, Nepal telecom has realised that the company should launch new plans to increase its profit growth rate, he said, adding that value added services might rescue the company that had once monopoly in the market.

Currently private players are more competitive and aggressively and giving a tough time to the once a complete government entity.

Consumers have also been inclined towards using value added services. “Consumers have been seeking for more than just basic telephony services,” he said, adding that value added service in telecommunication sector refers to non-core or basic services but adds value in total service offering. Value-added services add value to standard service offering, spurring the subscriber to use their phone more and allowing the operator to drive up average revenue per user.

For mobile phones technologies like SMS, MMS and GPRS are usually considered value-added services.
