NT changing transmission system to enhance GSM network

KATHMANDU, Jan 15:

Nepal Telecom (NT) is changing internal transmission system in different parts of the Kathmandu Valley from Tuesday midnight to enhance quality and capacity of its GSM network.

Officials of NT said they were changing transmissions system in the new base transceiver stations (BTSs) installed recently by Chinese telecommunications vendor Huawei.

Surendra Prasad Thike, manager of NT, said the internal transmission link will be changed starting Tuesday midnight. “We will be changing the transmission system in interval of two days so that the lines do not get disturbed,” Thike said, adding that this will enhance the quality as well as capacity of NT´s GSM service.

According to Thike, the state-owned telco will be changing transmission system in the newly introduced BTS on Tuesday night, Friday night and Monday night. “We will be changing the transmission system of the newly installed BTS only,” Thike said

Surendra Karmacharya, deputy manager of GSM Transmission Sector of NT, said NT is changing the transmission system now as the device was not ready when it replaced old BTS built by ZTE with the new BTS.

NT officials said its GSM users might experience technical difficulty for a maximum of 20 minutes. “We have already informed the customers about the change in the transmission link being carried out in different areas on different days,” said Karmacharya, adding that this is a regular process carried out to enhance service quality.

NT started migrating to the new network from July last year. NT has said that it will have the capacity to distribute 10 million mobile lines under packages A and B by 2015.
The Package B consists of 4.8 million GSM lines for Kathmandu Valley and western development region. Similarly, Package A consists 5.2 million GSM lines for eastern, central (except Kathmandu Valley), mid-western and far-western regions.

The state-owned telco, whose profit has been declining in the recent years, has been trying to increase revenue by providing better services and offering various schemes to its customers.

NT has been providing 5 percent extra talk value for those topping up their mobile balance through MPoS. It has extended the offer by a month till mid-February.
