Newly Elected House of Representatives Convenes First Session Today
The first session of the newly elected House of Representatives (HoR) is set to commence today, marking the formal beginning of a new parliamentary term following the general elections held on March 5.
The meeting has been scheduled for 2:00 pm at the multipurpose hall of the under-construction Federal Parliament Building in Singha Durbar. The session has been called by President Ramchandra Paudel on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, in accordance with constitutional provisions.
According to Ekram Giri, spokesperson for the Federal Parliament Secretariat, all necessary preparations have been completed to ensure the smooth conduct of the session. These include arrangements related to physical infrastructure, security, technical systems, and human resources. Meanwhile, the National Assembly, the upper house of the Federal Parliament, will convene separately in its designated chamber at the Parliament Secretariat.
The newly formed 275-member House of Representatives reflects a diverse political composition. The ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party holds a commanding majority with 182 seats. The main opposition Nepali Congress has secured 38 seats, followed by the CPN (UML) with 25 members and the Nepali Communist Party with 17. Other parties represented in the House include the Shram Sankriti Party with seven seats and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party with five, along with one independent lawmaker.
As per today’s agenda, the government is set to present three ordinances in the House. Home Minister Sudhan Gurung will table the ‘Voters’ List (First Amendment) Ordinance, 2082’, the ‘Election of Members of the House of Representatives (First Amendment) Ordinance, 2082’, and the ‘Nepal Special Service (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2082’. These ordinances are expected to be key legislative priorities in the initial phase of the new government.
The session will be chaired by the senior-most member of the House, Arjun Narsingh KC, as per parliamentary tradition. During the meeting, lawmakers are also expected to discuss and finalize the date for the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, crucial positions that will guide the functioning of the lower house.
Today’s session marks an important milestone in Nepal’s democratic process, setting the stage for legislative deliberations, governance, and policy-making under the newly elected leadership.
