Nepse index drops below 350-point benchmark

KATHMANDU, May 1:
Though the trading volume has increased in the secondary market, the index reached six-year low at 347.72 points after plunging by 10.73 points in the week’s (April 25 to 28) trading.

This week, Nepse trading floor observed 644,960-unit shares of 114 companies worth Rs 356.2 million being traded through 6,046 transactions in the four trading days. This is 258.66 per cent up in transaction volume in comparison with that of last week. Bottlers Nepal’s (Balaju) 428,755 shares were traded in the secondary market this week which shot up the trading volume.

Since September 2010, the secondary market is performing badly. However, from March the downslide has gained momentum as the index is dropping rapidly.

On Monday morning, the secondary market opened at 358.45 points and by the closing time it reached 356.87 points. On Tuesday, the index further went down to 356.87 points. Next day, the index went down by 6 points taking the index to 350.15 points, lowest in last six years. On the last trading day, the index further slid to 347.72 points.

The sensitive index measuring the performance of Class-A companies declined by 2.96 points reaching 85.72 points by the end of the week. Among the total transactions, the trading of blue-chip stocks of Class-A companies consisted 7.22 per cent, amounting to Rs 25.7 million. The float index that indicates the performance of the actual shares traded throughout the week also went down by 0.53 points to 29.28 points. This week also all of the subgroups except for manufacturing ended up in the red zone.

Manufacturing subgroup gained 3.58 points in the week’s trading as Bottlers Nepal’ (Terai) and Bottlers Nepal’s (Balaju) stock price rose this week. The stock price of Nepal Telecom (NTC) plunged by Rs 40, pulling the others subgroup down by 46.98 points.

Hydropower subgroup also went down by 8.55 points as the stock prices of both Arun Valley Hydropower and Chilime Hydropower lost points.

Commercial banks, development banks, finance companies and insurance companies lost 5.64 points, 3.92 points, 1.92 points and 2.01 points, respectively.

This week saw Bottlers Nepal (Balaju) topping the charts in terms of transaction amount and the number of shares traded with the transaction of 428,755-unit shares worth Rs 311 million and in terms of number of transaction Gaurishankar Development Bank Ltd topped with 1,993 transactions.
