Nepse ends week with slight gain of 2.21 points
KATHMANDU, OCT 16 -
The Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) ended the first week after Dashain festival with a slight gain of 2.21 points. The market that opened at 331.26 points on Sunday closed at 333.47 points on Thursday, the last trading day of the week.
Over the four transaction days last week, Nepse recorded gains on the second and third days, while it fell on the last day. None of the sub indices witnessed a significant movement.
Groups representing commercial banks, hydropower companies and others gained 3.06, 5.13 and 4.70 points, respectively, while hotels, insurance companies, finance companies and development banks posted losses of 1.14, 3.35, 1.82 and 1.14 points, respectively. Manufacturing industries and trading sector saw no change in their indices.
Although the Dashain vacation is over, analysts say the market will continue to remain stagnant for some more time. “No specific positive development has taken place to restore investors’ confidence and keep the market vibrant,” said stockbroker Nanda Kishore Mundara. “Neither the listed companies are giving good returns nor has the lending rate of banks come down.”
Mundara, however, suggested that if people divert their savings to stock market as long-term investment, the market will rise.
Despite the nominal rise in the index, the market witnessed appreciation in its market capitalisation. It surged to Rs 304.33 billion last week from Rs 301.42 before the festival. However, the transaction amount decreased significantly, with the figure coming down by almost 70 percent to Rs 41.47 million from Rs 138.22 million.
Nepal Investment Bank topped the chart in terms of transaction amount, realising a turnover of Rs 3.30 million. National Hydropower Company took the pole position in terms of the number of shares traded (52,277), while Kankai Bikas Bank posted the highest number of transactions (416).
