On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, along with the Ministry of Health and Population, announced the establishment of one Autism based Model School in each of the seven provinces of Nepal. The program was chaired by the Minister of Education and held in the presence of the Minister of Health and Population along with senior officials from both ministries.

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a condition that affects how a person communicates, learns, and interacts with others. People with autism may find it difficult to express themselves, understand social situations, or adapt to everyday environments. It is called a "spectrum" because its effects vary widely from person to person, ranging from mild to severe. With the right support, education, and environment, children with autism can learn and grow effectively.

Following the event, the government has assigned responsibilities to multiple ministries to make this initiative a reality. The Department of Urban Development and Building Construction will handle physical infrastructure, the Ministry of Education will manage the operational framework, the Ministry of Health will provide support for children with autism, and the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens will coordinate with relevant organizations in the sector.

A technical committee has been formed to prepare a concept paper for the implementation of these schools. The committee has been tasked to quickly improve the quality of existing programs for students with disabilities including autism and to fast-track the establishment of the model schools across the country. The Ministry has also urged all schools and organizations currently running programs for children with autism to make their services more accessible and easier for these children.
