The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) today has announced the implementation of the Moblie Device Management System (MDMS) to come into effect from Monday itself.

The NTA issued a press release mentioning that the mobile sets brought for personal usage cleared by the customs office shall be automatically registered in the MDMS system.

Following the development, NTA also drew the attention of the customers to verify whether or not the mobile phones purchased in Nepal have been registered in the MDMS system. Similarly, all mobile set importers and sellers shall oblige to attain prior clearance from the Telecom Authority.

Earlier on Sunday, the Department of Customs under the Ministry of Finance had elaborated on a previous decision approved by the Council of Ministers granting custom concessions on mobile phones brought from abroad.

The Department of Customs had clarified that only those who venture abroad after receiving Labour Approval and returning to Nepal after having worked for minimum six-months will be able to bring additional mobile sets without having to pay customs. However, the information of the additional mobile phone has to be provided at respective customs office.

Similarly, the Department of Customs further notified that those citizens who carry one set of mobile phone with them for personal use, purchased from abroad will be exempt from registering the device at customs office. Such nationals will have to self-register the said device via online services in the MDMS system.

In addition, students and those on tourist visas returning with extra mobile sets with them fall under the custom tax bracket.
