Nepal has been elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027-2029 term, securing the highest number of votes among the elected countries from the Asia Pacific region. In the election held on Tuesday at the UN headquarters in New York, Nepal received 173 votes out of 180 votes cast in the United Nations General Assembly.

Following the election, Nepal's Permanent Mission to the United Nations expressed gratitude to all UN member states for their trust and support. The mission reaffirmed Nepal's commitment to protecting human rights, promoting equality, social justice, and working closely with international partners. It also congratulated the other countries elected to the council for the new term.

This will be Nepal's third term on the council, following its previous memberships during 2018–2020 and 2021–2023. Nepal will begin its new term on January 1, 2027. Established in 2006, the UN Human Rights Council consists of 47 member countries elected for three-year terms and works to protect and promote human rights worldwide.
