Nepal Calls for Stronger UN Development System to Safeguard Multilateralism
Nepal has emphasized the urgent need to strengthen the United Nations Development System to ensure the continued relevance and effectiveness of multilateralism in a rapidly changing global landscape.
Speaking at the discussion on “The Future of Multilateralism: Building the UN Development System for the Post-2030 Era” held at the UN Headquarters in New York, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa, said the UN system must remain “fit for purpose” not only for the remainder of the 2030 Agenda but also for the challenges and opportunities beyond it.
Ambassador Thapa underlined that the decisions taken today will shape a stronger and more responsive multilateral system capable of delivering results for future generations. He stressed that the future of the United Nations cannot be designed by institutions alone, but must be built through enhanced partnership and global solidarity.
“The future of the United Nations cannot be designed by institutions alone. It must be shaped through stronger partnership and solidarity,” Ambassador Thapa stated.
He further highlighted the importance of inclusive engagement, noting that civil society, youth, academia, local authorities, the private sector, and other stakeholders must play a vital role in ensuring that the development system remains relevant, adaptive, and effective in the decades ahead.
