KATHMANDU:

The hallowed Pashupatinath Temple and its surrounding areas will soon be illuminated in the night with around five dozen solar lights which the Nepal Electricity Authority is planning to install.

Nutan Dev Bhattarai, Project Manager at NEA, said as many as 665 solar lamps are being installed along airport road and in Gaushala, Chabahil, Gaurighat, Hadigaun, Naxal, Baluwatar and Pashupatinath.

“Sixty solar lights will be installed in Pashupatinath area,” he said.

The Asian Development Bank is assisting in installing the solar lights in the capital city under ‘’Kathmandu Ujyalo Karyakram’’.

“The Pashupatinath area illuminated with solar lights will add to its beauty,” he said.

According to him, Kathmandu Metropolitan city and Pashupati Area Development Trust will manage the solar lights once they are installed.

In addition, PADT too is planning to add around 400 solar lights in the area.

Earlier, solar lamps were installed along the main roads of Maitighar, Tinkune, Ratna Park, Sundhara, Jamal, Tundikhel, Singha Durbar, Padmodaya Mode, Babar Mahal, Bijuli Bazaar, Kalimati, Soalteemode and Kamal Pokhari among many other thoroughfares of the capital city in view of the 18th SAARC Summit in November.

NEA had installed more than 1,000 solar lights in the capital city. However, due to excessive dust gathered on the solar panels, these lights at many parts have failed to work. NEA recently said that it would hand over the responsibility of managing the solar lights to KMC as it lacked equipment and resources to maintain them.
