NEA recovers Rs 45.2m from 4,750 defaulters

KATHMANDU, JAN 07 -

The Nepal Electricity Authority recovered Rs 45.2 million from 4,750 power tariff defaulters in the two-week period from December 19, 2012 to January 4, 2013. The amount was collected after the authority cut off power connection to these customers.

NEA officials said the authority has launched an aggressive campaign to recover outstanding dues from customers as per the NEA board’s decision.

In the first week (December 19-27), Rs 11.2 million in outstanding dues was recovered from 1,865 consumers, while the second week (December 28 to January 4) saw collection of Rs 45.2 million from 2,885 consumers, according to NEA Spokesperson Sher Singh Bhat.

Bhat said general consumers, industrial units, government offices and commercial bodies were among those penalised.

“As the NEA’s financial health is not so sound, it is must to take stern steps to recover outstanding dues from consumers,” said an NEA official, adding if negligent consumers were spared, even loyal customers would be encouraged to keep bill payments pending. “We will conduct the monitoring every week,” he said.
