Minister Padam Giri Pledges Expedited Action on Transitional Justice Bill

Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Padam Giri, affirmed on Monday the government's commitment to expedite the finalization of the Transitional Justice Bill. This declaration came during his acceptance of a demand letter presented by Raju Prasad Chapagain, Coordinator of the Accountability Watch Committee, on behalf of various organizations. Minister Giri reassured stakeholders that legislative amendments concerning transitional justice would adhere to Supreme Court rulings, acknowledge the aspirations of conflict victims, and align with international conventions and treaties.

In addressing concerns raised in the demand letter, Minister Giri emphasized the government's dedication to inclusive dialogue, ensuring that all voices are heard in the deliberation process regarding the Bill. Specifically, the demand letter sought clarification on the current status of the Bill, particularly regarding proposed amendments related to the formation of the recommendation committee and the selection of office-bearers.

Moreover, the delegation emphasized the urgency of initiating the appointment process for commissioners following the anticipated amendment in transitional justice legislation. They advocated for investigations into human rights violations during the conflict era to be conducted exclusively under the purview of the commissioner, in accordance with directives from the Supreme Court, particularly in light of the Suman Adhikari case. The delegation underscored the paramount importance of expediting the transitional justice process to address the concerns of all stakeholders, both within and outside of parliament, to prevent a repetition of past setbacks.
