Middle Mewa HPP 73.5 MW Powerplant completes Cavern Excavation; becoming one of its kind hydro project in Nepal
The excavation of underground powerplant cavern of Middle Mewa Hydropower Project (73.5 MW) that is being developed by Mewa Developers Limited (an associate company of Urja Developers Pvt. Ltd) has successfully accomplished today. The construction of the cavern measuring 61.5 meters long, 15 meters wide, and 27 meters in height was completed in less than 9 months. After the underground powerplant's construction is completed, three generator units with a capacity of 24.5 megawatts each will be installed; those generating machines are made from German technology.
In addition, the project's civil, hydromechanical, electromechanical, transmission line and other works are also in progress. Following the completion of the project, it will be able to generate 6 hours of peaking energy per day, even during the dry season, contributing 436.08 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy to the national power grid annually.
In a ceremony organized to mark the excavation completion of the underground powerplant’s cavern, Mr Bijay Bahadur Rajbhandary, Chairman of the company stated that the excavation of the underground powerplant’s cavern is a challenging endeavour for which he extended gratitude to the developer, contractor, consultant, employees and all who supported directly and indirectly. He added that this sort of powerplant is one among the fewer in Nepal.
Mr Bhanu Pokharel, Managing Director of the company stated that the excavation of the underground powerplant’s cavern is a complex process, and the successful completion of it has not only elevated the confidence to accomplish the remaining works on the stipulated time but also has set a new take-off point towards undertaking bigger hydropower projects in the days ahead. He also said that all efforts are being made to complete the project's construction within March 2024; the required commercial operation date (RCOD) of the project.
Mewa Developers is also preparing to open initial public offering (IPO) in the coming year.
