Manakamana Cable Car Embarks on Major Technological Upgrade After 25 Successful Years

Manakamana Cable Car, renowned as Nepal's first and most beloved cable car system, celebrates its 26th year of operation with a significant technological upgrade. Originally established with machinery from Austria's Doppelmayr, the cable car has operated flawlessly for 26 years, setting a benchmark in the industry.
The ongoing upgrade, necessitated by advancements in technology and safety standards, marks a transition from analogue to digital systems. The current analogue technology, with its DC-powered main motor, is being replaced with Doppelmayr's state-of-the-art D-Connect System, powered by AC. This upgrade not only enhances operational efficiency but also ensures smoother, more reliable service for passengers.
Key components transforming include the main haulage cable, extending approximately 6,500 meters, and the communication cable spanning 3,200 meters, now upgraded to meet digital standards. The grips, crucial for gondola safety, were already replaced two years ago, ensuring continued safety during operations.
The upgrade process, managed by Doppelmayr technicians, is estimated to take approximately 50 days, subject to weather conditions. Passengers will be regularly updated on any changes to the estimated completion date.
Main Tasks Underway Include:
1. Replacement of the main haulage cable.
2. Upgrade of the communication wire.
3. Installation of Thyristor Panel and Operation Panel for digital control.
4. Complete rewiring of the system.
5. Replacement of the DC Main Motor with an AC Main Motor Drive.
6. Overhauling of three towers.
7. Implementation of essential system upgrades.
8. Training of manpower through on-the-job training programs.
Throughout the upgrade process, the station building, towers, Bull Wheel, Bullwheel Frame, and Gondola will remain operational. Recent inspections and mechanical overhauls have prepared these components for continued safe operation.
The investment for this comprehensive upgrade amounts to approximately NPR 50 crore, reflecting Manakamana Cable Car's commitment to enhancing customer experience and safety standards. Operational controls will be managed digitally, with support available from Austria for resolving technical issues online.
