Major goods export decreases

During the fiscal year 2010 – 11 major exportable commodities observed a fall of 3.3 per cent compared to pervious fiscal year.
Major commodities exported during the fiscal year 2009 – 10 were worth Rs 15648.9 million whereas during 2010 – 11 the value was of Rs 15128.5 million, states the Central Bank data.
Most of exportable goods that are Handicraft products (Metal and Wooden) decreased by 66.5 per cent similarly export of Readymade Garment decreased by 21.5 per cent. Other commodities too observed a sharp decline, herbs (- 47.5 per cent), Nepali paper and paper products (- 27.9 per cent), Pulses (- 15.0 per cent), readymade leather goods (- 50.5 per cent), and Silverware and jewelleries (- 28.5 per cent).
Though the annual data of Nepal Rastra Bank shows a fall of 66.5 per cent in the total export of handicraft export, the data compiled by Federation of Handicraft Association of Nepal shows an increment of 11.72 per cent in total handicraft exported during the fiscal year 2010 – 11.
More than 20 handicraft products mainly the Pashmina products, woollen goods silver jewellery, Nepali handmade paper and paper products, metal crafts, wood craft, cotton goods etc are being exported to about 85 countries which alone absorb around 25 per cent of the total export of handicraft products. Britain, India, Canada, Germany, Japan, Italy, France, Australia, Netherlands and China are its major foreign buyers.
Meanwhile another major export commodity that is Nepali Readymade Garment export decreased by 21.5 per cent that is total garment worth Rs 3053.8 million was exported during 2010 – 11, which valued Rs 3890.7 million during 2009 – 10, states the NRB data.
Within Nepali RMG mainly coats, jackets, jumpers, shirts and blouses, skirts and trousers, quilted jackets and waistcoats etc made from cotton or rayon are the main categories exported from Nepal. The major export market of Nepali RMG are USA, Canada, Germany, France, Netherlands, UK, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Australia, India etc.
Among various exportable commodities Pashmina products observed the highest increment among different products. According to the data, Pashmina worth Rs 2272.1 million was exported during 2010 – 11 which was about Rs 1267.6 million during 2009 – 10.
The Pashmina products account for more than 50 per cent of the total export figure of the handicraft products. And also it is the major export component under the handicraft goods category. The number of international export markets of Nepali pashmina products exceeds 40 out of which USA, Italy, Canada, UK, France, Japan, Germany and India are the major one. According to the central bank annual export data to other countries apart from India total export during 2010 – 11 increased by 1.8 per cent compared to last year that is export commodities worth Rs 21214.4 million was exported this year which was of about Rs 20830.3 million last year. Meanwhile, total export of major commodities to India increased by 8.4 per cent this year compared to last year.
