Prime Minister Balendra Shah has recommended Mahabir Pun for the post of Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. According to Deepa Dahal, Press Advisor to the Prime Minister, Pun is scheduled to take the oath of office at 3 PM today.

Pun's appointment carries a rare distinction in Nepal's political history. He was elected to the House of Representatives from Myagdi-1 as an independent candidate and independent members of parliament are almost never appointed to ministerial posts in Nepal's party dominated political system. His selection breaks that long standing norm and signals a shift in how the current government is approaching cabinet formation.

This is not Pun's first time in government. He previously served as Minister of Education, Science and Technology under the interim government led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki. In that role, he was known for pushing reforms in science and technology policy. Now, with the newly created Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, he will take charge of a dedicated portfolio focused on an area he has championed for decades.

Pun, 71, is one of Nepal's most respected figures in the field of technology and development. He founded the National Innovation Center and is widely credited with bringing wireless internet connectivity to remote areas of the Himalayas. His work has earned him several international awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award, which is often called Asia's equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
