Madhesi front warns it will obstruct budget
KATHMANDU, July 10:
A meeting of the joint Democratic Madhesi Front today threatened to obstruct tabling of the budget for the new fiscal (2011/12) if the finance minister did not include its demands.
“Representatives of the front will talk to Finance Minister Bharat Mohan Adhikary tomorrow. If the minister does not give assurance that our concerns will be incorporated in the budget, then we will not allow it to be tabled,” said Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta, chairman, Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum (Republic).
The government is scheduled to table the budget on June 14.
The Democratic Madhesi Front, which has a strength of 70 members in the Constituent Assembly (CA), condemned the government policy and programme for ignoring Madhes issues, at a meeting held in Singha Durbar .
“The policy document is influenced by hill-centric thought and totally ignores and discriminates against the Madhes. The front condemns the anti-Madhes policy approved on the basis of blind majority,” said a statement that included the five-point decision of the meeting.
The meeting condemned the recent arrest of Tarai Madhes Student Front’s central member Suresh Giri from Birgunj and demanded his immediate release. Police had arrested him on Thursday on the charge of thrashing the public and businessmen of Birgunj to make them cough up money as donation.
Condemning the Nepali administration for hassling vehicles on the Nepal-India border area, the front said, “The legal provision that no charge would be imposed on vehicles travelling across the border for just 24 hours, was not being followed.”
