Law weak to take action against abductors: PM

BIRATNAGAR, FEB 15 -

Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Thursday said the government is not being able to take stern action against those involved in kidnappings due to weaknesses in the country’s law.

Visiting the home of late Ganga Bishan Rathi, a Biratnagar-based industrialist who was murdered after abduction in India, the Prime Minister said the laws should be strong enough to sternly penalise perpetrators of abductions.

Stating that the government is the process of introducing the ordinance on organised crime, he said the ordinance includes stronger provisions.

Rathi’s brother Champalal Rathi, nephew Ramesh Rathi, central member of Federation of Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry Jagadish Rathi and president of Morang Trade Association Avinash Bohra told the Prime Minister that entrepreneurs have been terrorised after the incident.

Assuring them the government has held talks with the Indian government for taking stern action against the perpetrators of Rathi’s murder, Bhattarai said: “Be assured. The state is with you.” He asked the entrepreneurs to continue their work without any fear. Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-UML leader KP Sharma Oli and Home Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchadar, among other leaders, have also visited Rathi’s home to console his family.
