Kathmandu Metropolitan City has recently taken action to lock two health institutions operating within its jurisdiction. Mayor Balen Shah revealed that these institutions were suspended from operation after it was discovered that they were not operating legally during a monitoring process.

Prior to this, on Jestha 6, the Metropolitan Corporation had issued a notice stating that 10 percent of the total beds in health institutions should be dedicated to providing free treatment for specific target groups, including the helpless and destitute.

However, Mayor Shah clarified that the closure of the institutions was a result of non-compliance with the law and instability in service provision, as observed during the monitoring process. In response, he has instructed the health department of the metropolis to conduct more intensive monitoring of these two institutions that have been barred from operation.

Mayor Shah emphasized that this action was taken to ensure that health services are accessible to the general public in accordance with the provisions of the law, and not for the sake of popularity. Furthermore, he has issued a warning that legal measures will be taken against hospitals operating within the provinces and federations under the jurisdiction of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City if there is no improvement in their practices, in order to ensure equitable access to healthcare for all.
